The Mt. Pocono Rotary will sponsor its 24th Annual Community Aviation Day Fly-In Drive-In Pancake Breakfast on Sunday, May 26 from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm with this year’s proceeds benefitting Mt. Pocono Rotary and Pocono Services For Families and Children. For the past 24 years, the event has been held rain or shine at Pocono Mountains Municipal Airport on Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend. Mark Turner, Event Chair, comments, “Each year we try to add to the day’s events that include the pancake breakfast, airplane and helicopter rides, children’s activities, civilian and military aircraft displays, a Huey helicopter, public safety and car displays. We also have a parachute jump that follows our memorial tribute to Veterans.”
Tickets are $10.00 for adults and $6.00 for children 12 and under. The day’s activities include free airplane rides for children ages 8-17 donated by the Young Eagles EAA program, the presenting of the Colors and American flag parachute demonstration, aircraft, antique cars and military equipment displays, the Pocono Raceway pace car, children’s activities and a Memorial Day Ceremony. Parking is free.
Turner continues, “This event was created over 23 years ago to give residents and visitors to our area the chance to come to the airport, see the airplanes, experience helicopter and airplane rides, and generally find out about how to get youth involved with aviation. It has grown to be one of the Mt. Pocono Rotary’s largest annual fundraisers with over $170,000 raised that has been distributed to non-profit and deserving causes throughout the community.”
Pocono Services for Families and Children provides comprehensive, supportive services and resources for young children and their families in Monroe County to promote success in school and life. A nonprofit agency, PSFC has been serving our community’s most vulnerable young children and their families since 1965 and today serves about 300 children ranging in age from infants to sixth grade. Nearly 20 classrooms are located in strategic locations and underserved areas in the community. To better meet the varied and unique needs of our residents, PSFC continues to expand services and implement new programs. The Mountain Center
in Tobyhanna is home to various health/human service agencies that complement Pocono Services for Families and Children early learning educational programs. Research proves a return of $7.00 on each $1.00 invested in early childhood education. PSFC is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children and its programs have consistently earned Keystone STAR 4 status, the highest state designation available.
In addition to free airplane rides for children ages 8-17 donated by volunteers for the Young Eagles EAA Program, airplane and helicopter rides can be purchased with proceeds benefitting the charities. Those rides are donated by event sponsors Moyer Aviation, Hi-Tech Helicopters and Papillon Moyer Excavation. Sponsors for the event include Bailey’s, Shop Rite and Smuggler’s Cove as a lead sponsor for their food donation, Besko Outdoor, and Sky’s the Limit for the parachute demonstration. Turner concludes, “We are offering sponsorships and ads in our new program booklet that will be distributed to our attendees. We welcome area businesses to join us in raising money for Rotary and this year’s very worthy charitable organization.”
