National Soil & Water Stewardship Week

National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD) and the Monroe County Conservation District will observe National Soil & Water Stewardship Week from Sunday, April 27 through Sunday, May 4, 2014 with this year’s theme of “DIG DEEPER: Mysteries in the Soil” Soil is an amazing substance. A complex mix of minerals, air, and water; soil also teems with countless micro-organisms and the decaying remains of once-living things. Soil is made of life and soil makes life. To the farmer, soil is where crops grow. To the engineer, soil is a foundation upon which to build. To the ecologist, soil support communities of living things. To the archaeologist, soil holds clues to past cultures. To the city dweller, soil nurtures grass and gardens. To the soil scientist, soil is all of these things. Soil has been called “the skin of the earth” because it is the thin outermost layer of the earth’s crust. Like our own skin, we can’t live without soil. 2014 marks the 59th year of the NACD’s National Soil & Water Stewardship Week.  Help us celebrate “DIG DEEPER: Mysteries in the Soil” the week of April 27 through May 4.

For more information about Soil and Water Stewardship Week, please visit NACD’s website at www.nacdnet.org  or call the Monroe County Conservation District at 570-629-3060.

The Monroe County Conservation Camp is a residential camp being held from Saturday, July 19th through July 26th.  In its 40th year at Stony Acres, some of the campers’ favorite programs include stream and pond study, trapshooting and firearm safety, bird banding, archery, confidence/ropes course, and bass and fly fishing.  But what really makes Conservation Camp unique is the two-day, overnight canoe trip that it takes on the Delaware River.  Supported by the Kettle Creek Environmental Fund, the camp program presenters include professionals from the Pennsylvania Game Commission, Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, Tobyhanna Conservation Association, Blue Ridge/Cherry Valley Rod and Gun Club, National Park Service, Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry, and Pocono Wildlife Rehabilitation Center.  The campers are provided with many programs to teach them about wildlife and natural resource conservation/management. Conservation Camp costs $200, which includes a $75 application fee and a $125 camp fee.   The application fee must be paid by the student and included with the application form. The camp fee can be paid by the student, a sponsor, or a scholarship.  There are a limited amount of scholarships available on request.  For more information and an application, call the Monroe County Conservation District at 570-629-3061, email us at monroecd@ptd.net, or visit our website www.mcconservation.org.
